Black Stuff Project

Oreo McFlurries

By: Nathan Harvey

INT. His Dorm Room. He hears a knock at the door to the mod and one of his friends opening. It’s her.

Her (entering room)

Anyone home?

Him (smiling)

Hey! What a pleasant surprise. I didn’t know you were coming over. I thought you had that thing for that club.

Her

That thing for that club? You mean a meeting for AphiO ya goof.

Him

Yeah that’s what I said (laughs).

Her

(Trying not to smile) Whatever. So what are you up to?

Him

Oh nothing too exciting. Just working on that project for that class. And what I mean by that is my audio final for my audio production class.

Her

Haha very funny. Do you have time for a break?

Him

What did you have in mind?

Her

Oreo McFlurries.

Him

(Laughing) Of course you did. But that sounds good- I haven’t eaten since breakfast.

Her

Okay, I’ll go call the elevator.

Him

Do you know the number?

Her

You’re the worst.

Him

(Laughs satisfyingly)

INT. Elevator. Doors open and they walk out to get in the car. Radio turns on. She starts singing along. He smiles at her. They begin driving.

Him

So when did you know you loved Oreo McFlurries?

Her

Hmm…I think I first had one in middle school and it was definitely love at first sight or spoonful depending on how you look at it.

Him

That’s it? I was expecting an amazing, detailed story.

Her

(Laughs) It’s the truth! I swear it just happened one day.

Him

And you fell in love immediately?

Her

Absolutely. McFlurries are the bomb! I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!

Him

Haha trust me, I get it. But aren’t you afraid of loving something that much?

Her

What do you mean?

Him

Like don’t you ever worry about what would happen if McDonald’s ever discontinued them or went out of business?

Her

McDonald’s is never going to go out of business though. And I don’t see them discontinuing Oreo McFlurries. Have you had an Oreo McFlurry?!

Him

(Laughing) Yes, I’ve had a McFlurry before. But just humor me. What if something you love suddenly ceases to exist? Wouldn’t you be heartbroken? What would you—

Her

(Glaring suspiciously) What’s the point of all these questions?

Him

I’m just curious.

Her

(Continues glaring)

Him

What?! Will you just answer me? What would you do?

Her

Hmm…I’d probably just go to the store and get some Cookies ‘n’ Crème ice cream. Or if I was feeling really crazy I’d buy some vanilla ice cream and some Oreos and then mix them together.

Him

But wouldn’t you worry that it would never be the same?

Her

I mean McDonald’s soft serve is pretty great, but I’m sure it wouldn’t be too different. I’d probably still enjoy it. Seriously though what’s with all these questions?

Him

Well, I-…Oh hey we’re here! I’m so ready for this McFlurry.

Her

Me too.

They pull up to the drive thru and place their order.

Rando’s Voice

Can I take your order?

Him

(To her) What size should we get?

Her

Hmmmmm…medium!

Him

Yeah can I get two medium Oreo McFlurries?

Rando’s Voice

Will that be all?

Him

Yep.

Rando’s Voice

Your total is $3.78. Please pull up to the next window.

Rando’s Voice

That’ll be $3.78.

He hands Rando the money and they pull up to the next window where they receive their McFlurries and begin eating.

Her

Oh my gosh! These are the greatest.

Him

They are pretty great.

Her

(Mumbles something with a mouthful of McFlurry.)

Him

(Laughing) So I forgot to tell you, I made this mashup today that I think you’ll really like. Do you want to hear it?

Her

Of course!

He scrolls through his iPod to find the song and hits play. They sit and listen for approximately 4 minutes to a Marvin Gaye mashup. She is smiling and bobbing her head. He is smiling knowing she’s enjoying the song.

Her

This is awesome! How did you get this to match up?

Him

Actually it was completely random. I just stumbled onto it.

Her

This matches up so well. You’re lucky.

Him

(Looks at her) I feel pretty lucky.

She smiles at him as the song comes to and end. There is silence now. She breaks it.

Her

So earlier when you were interrogating me about my love for McFlurries, it wasn’t really about McFlurries was it?

Him

I don’t know.

Her

Tell me.

Him

Maybe, maybe not.

Her

Why won’t you tell me? Are you scared?

Him

Yes.

Her

Why? You can tell me anything. I’m the one who’s always here for you.

Him

But what if you’re not? It’s much easier to not fall in love at all isn’t it? I can’t just go to the store and buy vanilla ice cream and Oreos. It wouldn’t be the same.

Her

You can’t think like that though.

Him

Why not? It’s perfectly understandable for someone to be scared of losing what they love.

Her

Yeah but if you think like that, you’d never know how great Oreo McFlurries could have been.
